Is a water softener and reverse osmosis system necessary? A water softener removes water hardness, which may damage faucets, stain sinks, damage appliances, etc. I use a whole-house water filter to filter water from the street before it enters my water softener. After the water softener, my ice makers and refrigerator’s water dispenser use water that are filtered by my reverse osmosis system. I primarily use an RO system to remove the negligible amount of sodium that the water softener creates but it also removes odor from the water and makes it perfectly clear and delicious! The ice cubes that are made with my RO-filtered water have a clear shine to them. It’s amazing!
