Step-By-Step Green Screen Tutorial

Creating a green screen studio is not as difficult as one might think! Within this video, I explain step-by-step how I designed my green screen studio. Larger rooms can be used to create full-body green screen sets but in a small room like mine, I was able to create a highly-convincing green screen studio. Quality lighting is crucial for a green screen set. I hired an affordable electrician to install these LED lights overhead. Next, I purchased these two umbrella lamps to light the green screen. For the green screen itself, I purchased “STRAIGHTFORWARD GREEN” chroma key paint from Sherwin Williams in flat latex. Flat is important because flat doesn’t reflect like other paint finishes. If painting a wall is not an option, a green screen kit such as this one should work well. A key light is important for lighting one’s face and body. I recommend a key light such as this one, so that the brightness level can be adjusted. To eliminate “room echo” and/or “wall sound,” I recommend using a lavalier microphone. Camcorders can get the job done for a green screen but for more professional results, I recommend this camera body and manual focus lens. A studio monitor is a nice feature for filming one’s self. Play with lighting and work to accomplish no shadows on the green screen. In my setup, I stand approximately two feet in front of my green wall. Use gaffer tape to mark the location of all lights and tripods. Should the equipment be moved, it makes re-achieving the optimal green screen setup again less time consuming. I also take a photograph of my manual focus settings, as well as the brightness level on my key light. If there is a window in the studio space, purchasing a blackout curtain to make the lighting more consistent during day and night may be worthwhile. Patience is key! Once the optimal configuration for one’s green screen studio has been found, it’s well worth the time in my opinion! Enjoy and please share this tutorial with others.
